A bit like Halloween, it seems like Black Friday is a fairly recent thing over here in the UK.

And similar to the trick or treating phenomena, we’ve also adopted from the US, it can sound a little sinister.
Especially when it’s supposed to signify the start of the holiday season, which is surely a happy time?

So why did today get it’s name?

Well according to US Economy magazine “Black Friday is the name given to the shopping day after Thanksgiving because so many people went out to shop that it caused major traffic accidents and sometimes even violence.”

It’s all starting to make sense now as shopping and driving don’t tend to bring out the best in people especially the two activities combined!

Fortunately “Black Friday” does mean something positive today.
Consumers get the chance to snap up a bargain and Retailers can have a very profitable day.

So the term is now used to reflect sales success.

Accountants generally use black to signify profit.
Red, however festive it may look, is used to signify loss.

Therefore, Black Friday means profitable Friday to retailing and to the economy which has got be to good news.

What are you going to be doing to drum up sales in your business on Black Friday?
